Yep, it’s bigger here

Since the age of three, when my family moved to the outskirts of Houston from Iowa, my two sisters and I piled into the family station wagon with my brave parents every summer for the 20-hour drive to visit family in Des Moines. There were two particularly memorable moments during those drives:

  1. Driving on the overpasses in Dallas that seemed higher than the skyscrapers while we teased my poor mother, who is afraid of heights, mercilessly
  2. When we hit the northern border of Texas.

That second moment was always an occasion because it meant we were almost halfway to Iowa. To put it in perspective … in the same amount of time we could drive about half the length of Texas, we could drive through another three or four states. That’s big.

I’m reflecting on this now because I’m leading my own family on a road trip this summer. It will be a rare chance to sit back and enjoy the beautiful countryside of Texas. We’ve got everything here … Hill Country, flatlands, rivers, lakes, highways, byways, country roads, interstates, big cities, small towns, super-sized rest stops, one-pump stations, and everything in between.

Whatever you want in your road trip experience, you can find it in Texas … except Iowa sweet corn sold off the back of a truck along the road side, which really is the best corn you’ll ever taste in your lifetime. Besides that, there’s nothing I can’t find in Texas and I plan to enjoy it fully this summer. I hope you do as well!
