Texas now a ‘majority minority’ state
More than half of Texas residents are Hispanic, Black, Asian, or come from non-European backgrounds. By 2010 these minority residents are likely to comprise the majority of first-time homebuyers. In 2005, first-time buyers purchased 42% of homes bought in Texas. Texas currently ranks only 42nd out of 50 states in homeownership, but demographic patterns suggest a real opportunity for exponential growth. Texas REALTORS® are working on a variety of fronts to help more current and future Texans of all ethnic backgrounds achieve their dreams of homeownership. One way is by providing consumer information critical to the home-buying process in Spanish. Another is by participating in the new joint venture with AMPI, the Mexican counterpart to the National Association of REALTORS®. This new joint venture will help facilitate home sales for U.S. residents wishing to purchase homes in Mexico and vice versa.
