Do you want to see the personal side of Mary? Read on to hear her story in her words . . .
“Finding out that you have cancer is always terrifying. It was a battle that made me feel worn out and like my own body was my enemy. As time wore on, I was becoming more confident and self-assured. It made me into the person I am today.
I looked in the mirror, fastening the earring into place. My then-husband fiddled with his own earring.
“You’re sure you want to do this?” he asked. “It doesn’t seem a little dark?”
“You don’t think it’s funny?” I countered.
“Oh, I think it’s funny,” he assured me.
“So, take the picture.”
I started chemotherapy the day after I turned 29. Not my favorite birthday. I’d never felt so awful. I couldn’t make it downstairs to do the laundry or upstairs to my bedroom without stopping to rest at the landing.
It had started out with a swollen lymph node. I wasn’t that concerned, but it became clear it wasn’t going anywhere, so I decided to see a specialist.
“It could be a number of things,” he told me. “We’ll get a biopsy done just to be sure it isn’t anything serious.”
Of the more serious possibilities was Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I couldn’t resist but to look up the symptoms online. I ticked every box. I didn’t need to wait for the results. I already knew. I had cancer. I sobbed through the night and the next day as I tried to schedule an appointment with the surgeon to verify my research. The receptionist told me the next appointment couldn’t be scheduled for three weeks. I finally wore the receptionist down, and she confirmed that I had lymphoma.
When I first began to lose my hair, it was really hard on me, though I soon discovered the joy of wigs. I hadn’t previously had the opportunity to switch out my hairstyle day-to-day. Earlier on, wearing a wig out of the house made me self-conscious. I wondered if people would notice. But that was nowhere near as self-conscious as I knew I’d be without one. For the most part, I didn’t mind, but they were itchy and hot. It was an extra step to my routine when I was already exhausted. Then, one particular exchange changed my outlook.
On this day, I’d had it with the wigs. I had errands to run, and I decided to venture out of the house in all my bald glory. It was early in the morning, midweek, so there would be fewer people out.
But of course, I happen to be approached by an older man. He told me, “I don’t want to be offensive, but I have a question. I’m curious why a lovely young lady like you would shave her head? Why don’t you grow out your hair?”
“Because I have cancer.”
The poor guy was horrified, but I realized if he was asking that, I must not have looked sick! I took it as a huge compliment!
It also resulted in me feeling a lot more comfortable in my own skin, full head of hair or not. I was so comfortable that I was able to talk my husband at the time into shaving his head in solidarity, which is what led to us taking that picture.
We put on white t-shirts and rolled up the sleeves, each of us with one earring in for a picture that we captioned “Mr. and Mrs. Clean.”
The chemotherapy was only supposed to last for six months but instead, it ended up lasting for nine, which ensured that we kicked my cancer to the curb.
I’m bolder, enjoy life and confident in positive outcomes. I have two miracle children (I was told I couldn’t have kids after the cancer), a new partner I’m crazy about, and a career I love. My journey has been phenomenal, and I hope for the opportunity to be a part of your journey!
If there’s one thing I’m familiar with, it’s moving day! As an ex-military wife, I’ve experienced struggles all across the country: Texas, California, Arizona, Alabama, Maryland, Ohio and more. I can relate to people who are relocating. I’ve been in their shoes. I get how hard it can be to get to know a town, get established, and find your people. Each time you have to rebuild your community and make new friends in a place you’re unfamiliar with. I like to think I’m living proof of how well that can end up going. I stay by my clients’ side and not only help them find the right house but also the place where they truly belong. I’ve bought eight houses in various locations that I wasn’t familiar with, learning new things after each transition. I’m in an excellent place to help others who are struggling through similar circumstances. I’d love to have the chance to help guide you to your new home as well.
