From childhood through to adulthood, I was always encouraged by my mother’s passionate dedication to being the best parent she could be, despite being a single parent. Not only did this inspire me, but it molded me into a loving, caring, and decent man. Unknowingly having both the will to survive and the desire to thrive, I refused to allow my disadvantaged circumstances to dictate my future.

Instead, I chose to take charge of my destiny and rewrite the story of my life. In 2005, at the age of twenty-nine, it became evident that I was quickly running out of time to make something of myself. So, I packed my belongings into a storage facility, stuffed some clothes into a couple of suitcases, and set off to see what was “beyond the horizon.” Little did I know, this gamble would take me around the world. Later that year, while working as a restaurant server in Grand Canyon National Park, a summer romance blossomed. One thing led to another, and on December 15, 2005, I found myself standing at the boarding gates of an international flight with a final destination of Guangzhou, China!

A year-and-a-half into my life in China, I experienced getting a “Dear John” letter and becoming homeless for a brief moment. With the help of amazing friends, I put my life back together and went on to become one of the best foreign language teachers in the city. During all of this, I met a new girl and fell in love again! After several years of dating, we got married, started a family, and opened two English Language Training Centers that we ran for several years.

Finally, after twelve years of extraordinary experiences, the time had come to close this chapter of my life and start a new one. So, in the summer of 2017, my family and I relocated to Houston, Texas. Just in time to get slammed by Hurricane Harvey! Additionally, eight months after our return, I lost the one person who had supported me through thick and thin, my beloved mother. Again refusing to allow tragedy to define my life, I returned to school and earned an Associate Degree in Business/Real Estate, graduating with High Honors.

These combined experiences have taught me that life is so very precious. Consequently, I have vowed to honor my mother’s legacy by helping and encouraging others, and all the while passing these virtues on to my children.

My sincere hope is that my story is a living testament that anyone can achieve their dreams if they so choose.
